The concept of this
development embraces
the agricultural
history of the site.
Agriculture has been
the primary function
of the land since it
was originally
homesteaded by the
Friedrich Family. It
makes sense to honor
this practice by
preserving the rural
character of the
landscape as the
land-use evolves. We
do this by creating
agricultural icons
like the four
windmills integrated
into the landscape.
We also honor the
history of the farm
by preserving and
enhancing the
farmstead. Here we
focus on families
and provide spaces
for them to gather.
The restored
grainery becomes the
community gathering
space and a skating
pond gives families
four seasons of
recreational
opportunities.
Another way
in which we retain
the landscape
character is the use
of Agricultural
Preserves within the
shared open space.
This land, which is
still in production,
will continue to be
utilized by the
Friedrich Family for
many years. Another
land maintenance
effort is the
proposed series of
hedgerows featuring
native trees and
shrubs along the
perimeter of the
property. The main
entry planting also
ties into the
agricultural history
with a windmill and
reflecting (trough)
pool.
To help
enhance the quality
of life at the Farms
of Lake Elmo, we
have planned for
numerous
recreational
opportunities. Paved
trails will connect
shared open spaces,
including fire
rings, benches,
wetland / pond
overlooks, and allow
for potential
connections to
adjacent land-use
amenities. Taking
into account the
need for more active
recreation, we have
provided a number of
green spaces that
could function as
informal impromtu
athletic fields and
play areas.
