Engineering the View: Kootenia Homes Featured on Builder Online for Monumental Window Wall Installation
At Kootenia Homes, we believe great design begins with the view. Many of the homes we build in the eastern Twin Cities sit on exceptional lots lakeshores, wooded acreage, and scenic landscapes. Our goal is always the same: blur the line between indoors and outdoors.
That philosophy is exactly what led to one of our recent projects being featured by Builder Online for its innovative approach to installing a monumental window wall system.
Designing Around Natural Light
Natural light continues to be one of the most desired features in modern homes. In fact, industry surveys show that access to daylight ranks among the top priorities for homeowners today, even ahead of smart-home technology and energy features.
For this custom lake home, we wanted to create a truly immersive experience—one where the view itself became the centerpiece of the living space.
The solution was a dramatic 12-foot by 30-foot window wall, forming a 360-square-foot viewing portal overlooking the lake. The expansive glass wall floods the home with daylight while providing uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape.
As our vice president of construction, Steve Frosch, explained in the feature, bringing the outdoors in is a signature element of our design philosophy.
The Challenge of Monumental Glass
While the finished result looks effortless, building a window wall of this scale requires careful planning and engineering.
The system needed to achieve several goals simultaneously:
-
Maintain narrow sightlines and a modern, post-free appearance
-
Withstand Minnesota’s extreme weather conditions
-
Meet strict structural and wind-load requirements
-
Install safely and efficiently on-site
To accomplish this, our team worked with Andersen Windows & Doors and implemented their Easy Connect Joining System—a patented installation approach designed for large window assemblies.
A Smarter Installation Process
Instead of installing individual panes one at a time, the window wall arrived as six factory-assembled units that could be maneuvered into the rough opening and connected together on-site.
This approach provided several advantages:
Faster Installation
The preassembled units significantly reduced installation time. According to our team, the wall was installed in about half the time originally expected, and with fewer installers required.
Improved Safety
Because the units were delivered partially assembled and lighter to handle, crews could position them more easily and safely without excessive on-site assembly.
Greater Precision
Factory assembly ensured consistent alignment and minimized the risk of glass damage or frame distortion during transport and installation.
The joining system also meets rigorous performance standards for air, water, and structural integrity—important for homes in climates like Minnesota where weather conditions can be unpredictable.
The Power of the Window Wall
When completed, the window wall transformed the great room into a dramatic architectural feature. The entire space becomes oriented around the landscape, with expansive lake views framed by slender window connections and uninterrupted glass.
This kind of design isn’t right for every home, but when the lot, architecture, and homeowner’s vision align, monumental glass can create an extraordinary living experience.
Crafting Homes Around Exceptional Lots
At Kootenia Homes, we often work with premium homesites where the landscape itself is the most valuable feature. Whether overlooking lakes, wetlands, or wooded acreage, our goal is to design homes that fully capture those views.
Projects like this showcase how thoughtful engineering and modern building technology can elevate architecture—turning natural surroundings into the focal point of the home.
Being recognized by Builder Online for this project is an honor and a reflection of the craftsmanship and collaboration that go into every Kootenia home.
