East Coast Charm Meets Midwest Lake Living: A Mahtomedi Home by Kootenia Homes
At Kootenia Homes, every project begins with a conversation about how our clients want to live. For one couple building their forever home on the shores of White Bear Lake, the vision was clear: create a timeless lakeside retreat inspired by East Coast coastal architecture while embracing the relaxed lifestyle of the Midwest.
We’re honored that this project was recently featured in White Bear Lake Magazine, highlighting how thoughtful design and craftsmanship can bring together two distinct regional styles into one cohesive home.
A Lake Home Designed for the Next Chapter
As the homeowners approached retirement, they decided to consolidate their primary residence and vacation cabin into one thoughtfully designed lakefront home in Mahtomedi. Their goal was to create a space that would function beautifully for everyday living while also serving as a welcoming gathering place for family and friends.
Working alongside TEA2 Architects and interior designer Interior Impressions, our team collaborated to design a home centered around comfort, views of the lake, and effortless entertaining.
The result is a lakeside residence that captures the spirit of Nantucket-style architecture while remaining grounded in Midwestern practicality.
A Coastal Influence with Timeless Appeal
The homeowners were inspired by the relaxed elegance of Nantucket—a style known for its historic charm and enduring materials. The design team leaned into that aesthetic through classic architectural elements and a soft, neutral palette intended to remain timeless for years to come.
Inside the home, the main floor features an open-concept great room that seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining area and living space—all oriented to capture sweeping views of the lake. Coffered ceilings, custom millwork and light finishes create a bright, serene environment reminiscent of coastal homes.
A carefully curated mix of furnishings adds warmth and personality. Family heirlooms and flexible pieces—like a drop-leaf console table that can expand for visiting grandchildren—bring meaningful character to the space.
Functional Design Behind the Scenes
One of the most practical features of the home is the kitchen’s scullery, tucked just behind the main kitchen. This secondary workspace keeps everyday dishes and prep out of sight during gatherings while still maintaining views of the lake.
Hand-painted Spanish tile was selected for the backsplash in this space, blending Old World craftsmanship with a design motif inspired by the homeowners’ Scandinavian heritage.
Meanwhile, a bold design choice in the home office adds contrast to the otherwise light palette. The entire room is finished in a deep blue tone called “Grays Harbor,” creating a cozy, immersive workspace that still complements the coastal theme.
Designing for Lake Life and Entertaining
Because the home was built on a slab rather than a traditional Minnesota basement, the design team created a spacious recreation area on the second level. This gathering space includes a lounge area, fireplace, wet bar and access to a large deck overlooking the lake—making it an ideal setting for hosting family and friends year-round.
Upstairs, the homeowners say the deck has become one of their favorite places in the home, offering breathtaking views and a front-row seat to the ever-changing sunsets over the lake.
Wellness and Natural Materials
The primary suite was designed as a spa-like retreat, incorporating natural materials that reflect the surrounding landscape. Riverstone details, cut stone surfaces and a calming layout help create a restorative environment.
One of the standout features is a Finnish-style sauna, a nod to the strong Scandinavian traditions found throughout Minnesota.
Discovering History During Construction
During demolition of the original 1960s home on the property, our team uncovered an unexpected piece of local history: concrete footings from the former Wildwood Amusement Park, which operated along the lake’s southeast shore in the late 1800s.
Discoveries like this remind us that every homesite has a story—and we’re honored to help write its next chapter.
Building Homes That Reflect the Way You Live
This Mahtomedi lake home is a perfect example of what we love most about custom homebuilding: collaboration. By working closely with our clients, architects and designers, we’re able to create homes that reflect not just a style—but a lifestyle.
From East Coast inspiration to Midwest comfort, this home captures the best of both worlds while celebrating the beauty of life on White Bear Lake.
